School Nutri Gardens (SNGs) Development Guidelines 2024 in Schools

All the District Educational Officers in the State are hereby informed that setting up School Nutrition (Kitchen) Gardens(SNGs) may achieve the goal of learning a lifelong skill which is of critical importance in the arena of rapid urbanization and environmental issued which shapes the behavioral pattern of the Students. It is just one step in the right direction for School Students to engage and participate meaningfully in the activities so as to inculcate the habit of growing own vegetables and fruits in the schools and in their homes.

Further informed that the Government of India in the Minutes of the PAB-2024-25 meeting of PM POSHAN Scheme advised the State Government to make concerted efforts for development of School Nutrition Gardens in all schools in FY 2024-25 as some districts i.e., West Godavari, Eluru, Anakapalli and East Godavari were having School Nutrition Gardens in less than 30% schools. Also directed to develop School Nutrition Gardens in convergence with local Krishi Vigyan Kendra of Agriculture Department and Horticulture Department etc. The funds available under MNREGA of Department of Rural Development for certain eligible components may also be utilized in convergence with them.


In view of the above, all District Educational Officers in the State are hereby requested to make consistent efforts on development of School School Nutrition (Kitchen) Gardens(SNGs) in Schools under your control duly following the below mentioned guidelines provided as per GoI norms:-

i. To utilize this monsoon season to extent which is vital to grow all kind of plants & vegetables by providing the necessary moisture required to grow.

ii. To constitute committee at District level under the chairpersonship of the District Collector/CEO of Zilla Parishad with the following members:

a) District Collector/CEO of Zilla Parishad - Chairperson
b) KVK in-charge from the district
c) Representative from Forest Department
d) Representative from Rural Development,
e) Representative from Agriculture/Horticulture department f) Child Development Project Officers.
g) District Education Officer – Convenor

iii.To issue instructions to the Mandal Educational Officers to instruct the Principal/Head teacher of schools under their control for establishment and maintenance of the School Nutrition (Kitchen) Gardens at School level with the help of students, SMC members, and interested persons from community through ‘Shram Daan’ etc.

iv.To Set up Eco-Clubs in all Schools: The Eco Clubs established in the School shall be headed by the Principal/Headmaster/Head Teacher. Preferably, two teachers per School and one class in charge will assist in carrying out activities. All the Students, teachers, and parents of the children may be members of Eco Clubs. The Students Coordinator, in each class may encourage the participation of students. The head of the Eco –Club shall be responsible for execution of the activities of the Club with the help of another Teacher. Plantation activities may be carried out under Eco-Club activities.

v. To instruct the Mandal Educational Officers to identify the schools to develop SNGs and conduct a convergence meeting with representatives from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Agriculture/Horticulture Department & Child Development Project Officers concerned to make active participation for development of the SNGs in schools identified.

vi.To issue instructions to the Mandal Educational Officers to instruct the Principal/Head teacher of schools under their control to upload Necessary photos/ data related to SNGs in the module provided in IMMS APP which will be monitored on daily basis at State & District Level for development and maintenance of SNGs

Further the District Educational Officers of West Godavari, Eluru, Anakapalli and East Godavari whose progress in terms of SNGs is reported less than 30% schools during the year 2023-24 are hereby requested to take appropriate and persistent efforts to improve the development and maintenance of School Nutrition Gardens during the year 2024-25 and submit the action taken report to the undersigned.

Necessary detailed guidelines for development and maintenance of School Nutrition Gardens(SNGs) are enclosed herewith to take further necessary action for successful development of SNGs in schools so as to achieve the goal for shaping behavioral pattern of the Students in inculcating them in habit of growing own vegetables and fruits in the schools and in their homes.

Therefore, all the District Educational Officers in the State are requested to take necessary action in this regard and report compliance in the matter.
